‘Fairground Music: The World of Porthcawl Funfair’ is a collection of images by Eamon Bourke with prose by Robert Minhinnick.
Gomer has created a brilliantly-coloured testament to a world that can be thrilling yet dangerous. Every season the old excitements return, and when the trippers step out of their coaches there is a gleam of anticipation in their eyes. Capturing that gleam is the job of writer, photographer, and the publisher who puts the materials together.
‘Some people call metal detecting a hobby. Those people have no imagination. To me it’s a way of life. On my journeys over the sands in front of Porthcawl fairground, I become many things: geologist, archaeologist, historian, mapmaker, diviner, tidal detective. But really i’m none of those. I’m a seeker. As simple as that. It’s more than a profession, even greater than a passion. It’s a way of life. And i’ll be doing it forever. You see, I’ve found something to which I can dedicate my time. Can you say that?’
